Building the Visual Language of a Film

Field notes on performance, light and the choices that shape cinematic storytelling.

A visual language is a short list of rules that every department can remember on a tired night shoot.

Three rules, written down

  • One lens family for the whole film
  • Camera moves only when a character decides something
  • No light source that cannot be explained in the scene

Rules like these save hours on set, because they answer most questions before anyone asks them.
